  • EV CHARGING TECHNOLOGY: WHAT IS TRENDING IN 2022?

Stay up to date with product releases, company milestones, and the latest EVC 2 innovations in the Teltonika newsroom. More News 4/2/2026 New partnership with UK EV Installers to expand smart charging in the UK 3/19/2026 Teltonika Energy and Powerverse Announce Strategic Partnership 3/10/2026 Partnership with Kelvelec in the UK EV CHARGING TECHNOLOGY: WHAT IS TRENDING IN 2022? 15 April 2022 Although charging infrastructure is still a challenge, so many improvements have been made throughout the past few years. Nevertheless, it is still a lucrative field for innovations and next-gen technological advancements. Let’s see what is trending now and what technologies could disrupt the future. ‘The future will be electric’ is no longer a plain statement. Active electrification is already in progress. According to EV Volumes, in 2021, EV sales topped 6.7 million units, a 108% increase compared to 2020. To keep all these EVs on the go, a sufficient EV charging infrastructure is fundamental. The EV ecosystem is constantly evolving, and so is the EV charging industry. Although charging infrastructure is still a challenge, so many improvements have been made throughout the past few years. Nevertheless, it is still a lucrative field for innovations and next-gen technological advancements. Let’s see what is trending now and what technologies could disrupt the future. MAKING EV CHARGING SMART The first EV charging devices in the 18-19th century looked like huge metal boxes with cables and tens of random buttons. Over time, the technology advanced so much that today EV charging devices are very compact and minimalistic but smart and intuitive enough to make decisions independently. What functionalities make an EV charger ‘intelligent,’ though? The answer is simple: its ability to maintain seamless communication with an EV driver, an EV itself, the grid, and other charging stations. EV drivers are pleased if their chargers can indicate when the energy is least expensive . Most often, the price is down during the night. But none is impressed by leaving a cozy bed to plug in the car and start charging, right? This is why smart EV chargers also need a scheduling function to enable charging activities only at a particular time. Without any additional intervention from an EV driver. Such a great feature saves both time and money. With T eltoCharge , an EV driver needs to plug in the car, set charging using the app, and have no more worries. EV charging is made simple. Smart EV charging is no longer a trend which helps companies differentiate their products, it is a must-have feature that will lead the development of next-gen EV chargers. All smart features primarily add to a better customer experience making EV charging cheaper, more efficient, and sustainable. MAKING LOAD BALANCING DYNAMIC Dynamic load balancing is another feature closely related to smart charging, which primarily ensures safe charging and optimal energy distribution. Currently, the majority of the EV chargers offer static load balancing, which supposes manual load control. Let’s take home charging as an example. Usually, people use many electric appliances during the daytime that consume a substantial part of energy. Enabling EV charging when other devices are active is quite risky, as the property’s electrical capacity could overload. So an EV driver must consider the power available for the charger to use and, if needed, reduce the amperage available to charge an EV. So how does dynamic load balancing improve the experience? Dynamic load balancing is the perfect solution becoming available with more and more innovative EV chargers. The smart meter connected to a charger acts as the sensor that measures the property's power consumption in real-time; meanwhile, an EV charger reads the data and performs calculations. Then, instantly reacting to current changes, a smart EV charger automatically sets the maximum charging power at a given moment. ENABLING V2G OR BIDIRECTIONAL CHARGING Yet another EV charging trend to further develop in 2022 is vehicle-to-grid, or V2G, technology. It enables charging EV batteries and, at the same time, can make the batteries push the power back to the grid. What about using an EV as a powerhouse? Pecan Street, a transportation electrification and V2G research organization, estimates that each V2G-equipped EV could power a home for two to five hours or power up to five homes for about an hour. Can you just imagine? According to Virta, only 4% of EVs are on the go during the daytime. While the V2G technology allows the car to be used as a reserve almost 24/7 instead of just a few hours it is being charged. Nevertheless, the concept is quite complex and requires technological innovations. For instance, first of all, EVs need to be V2G-equipped. Also, to make V2G charging available, charging stations need additional software to access the central grid. However, this initiative will become a true revelation with a growing number of EVs and increasing load placed on the national grid. MAKING EV CHARGING WIRELESS? Although we are talking much about the upgrades of traditional EV chargers, there are many discussions around the next-gen phenomenon - wireless charging. The technology uses an electromagnetic field to transmit the energy between the charger and the car. All an EV driver has to do is align one’s vehicle to the wireless charging pad on the ground. The technology enabling wireless EV battery refills is under progressive development. In 2020, the wireless EV charging market was valued at $6.9 million. By 2030, it is forecasted to reach $207.4 million. The concept of wireless charging is also in the spotlight of such giant automakers like General Motors, Nissan, Volvo, or Tesla. In 2019, BMW was the first manufacturer that released a commercially-viable wireless charging system for its 530e plug-in hybrid electric sedan. In 2022, therefore, the market anticipates the come-out of the Genesis GV60 electric crossover - the first all-electric vehicle which is likely to feature a factory-installed wireless charging option. Although the idea of wireless charging is highly promising, its widespread adoption could take time. Currently, among the most significant challenges are slower charging speed compared to traditional EV chargers and expensive technological integration. But who knows, maybe this new trend soon will be the turning point in the entire charging industry? Overall, EV charging technologies’ move from niche market to mainstream is highly noticeable. Each upgrade and innovation in the field is aimed at having a reliable, scalable, cost-effective EV charging infrastructure. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! • How much time does it take to charge an electric car? It depends.

Stay up to date with product releases, company milestones, and the latest EVC 2 innovations in the Teltonika newsroom. More News 4/2/2026 New partnership with UK EV Installers to expand smart charging in the UK 3/19/2026 Teltonika Energy and Powerverse Announce Strategic Partnership 3/10/2026 Partnership with Kelvelec in the UK How much time does it take to charge an electric car? It depends. 8 March 2022 HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE TO CHARGE AN ELECTRIC CAR? IT DEPENDS. If you’re considering buying an electric vehicle (EV), now is a great time. Because now switching to an EV is easier and more cost-effective than ever. Why? First of all, gas prices are at an all-time high, and there is little chance they will ever get lower. Secondly, EVs are less harmful to the environment than internal combustion engine (ICE) cars. Thirdly, the EV charging infrastructure constantly improves to satisfy the charging demand each year. Last but not least, automakers now offer a way broader range of EVs to choose from. However, it’s pretty common to hear that charging time for EVs is too long to value the vehicle being a good investment. So, if something is holding you back from making the decision, it could be the idea of slow charging time. But worth a note is that charging technologies are advancing at the speed of light. EVs are pushed to become a commodity while recharging - a convenient and quick experience. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CHARGE AN EV? Typically, an electric car with a 60kWh battery needs about eight hours to charge with a 7,4kW charging point (assuming that the battery was empty before charging). However, these numbers are not set in stone, and EV charging time depends on multiple factors. So, what aspects can help you estimate the charging time in your situation? THE CAPACITY OF A CHARGING STATION One of the main factors defining the charging speed is the charging capacity of the EV charger. In other words, it depends on the power rating the device uses. The more power it can give, the faster an EV will be full. Usually, depending on the power capacity, the speed of EV charging is divided into three simple types: slow, fast, and rapid. Slow charging is typically provided by the chargers rated at 3kw - 7kw with an AC supply while charging time averages around 10-14 hours. Fast charging is the most popular way of topping up EV vehicles. The chargers falling under this category, including our TeltoCharge station, are rated at 7kw - 22kw with an AC supply. An EV could be refilled for a journey in around four to six hours by fast charging. Rapid charging is the way of recharging an EV at the quickest time possible. A standard rapid charger is usually rated at 50kw with a DC supply; however, the range of rapid chargers passes even 100kw. Such devices will give a full charge in about an hour while charging to 80% can take as little as 20 to 30 minutes (with the final 20% usually taking another 20 minutes). THE CAPACITY OF AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE AND SIZE OF THE BATTERY No doubts that batteries play a crucial role here. The bigger battery is, the more power it can hold. However, with charging times, it might be a different story. A lot depends on the EV’s charging capacity. For example, some EVs can take higher input of power (e.g., maximum Tesla Model 3 fast charge power - 250 kW). However, other electric car models support a significantly lower charging capacity (maximum Nissan Leaf fast charging power - 46 kW). So, in some cases, the size might play the wrong game, and a bigger battery with better charging capacity will be complete in a shorter time. Here’s a simple way to calculate your average charging time for your EV vehicle: If your battery has a capacity of 60kWh and you have a charging power of 4.4kWh, your charging time would be about 13.6 hours (considering your battery is entirely out of power). However, increasing the charging power will decrease the time it will take you to charge your vehicle. Let’s use the Renault Zoe with a battery capacity of 52 kWh as an example. Depending on the possible power delivery, the TeltoCharge charger can full this EV in the following time ranges: STATE OF CHARGE The state of charge (SoC) is the ratio of the available capacity and the maximum possible charge that a battery of an EV can store. To secure batteries and prolong their lifespan, automakers put systems that prevent batteries from draining below or charging above certain limits (usually over 80 percent and below 20 percent). This is why sometimes it is even better to have a battery not fully charged but leave its power below 80 percent to avoid a longer charge to the maximum. At the same time, topping up the battery instead of filling it up to 100 percent and letting it drain also reduces charging time. So again, the time necessary to charge an EV depends on many factors. Mainly it is defined by the size of the battery and the capacity of the charging station. The current preferred option is fast charging using the EV chargers rated at 11kW - 22kW. However, EV technology is advancing quickly, so it will not take long for EV charging to become even faster. LIKE THIS STORY? Share it with friends! • Smart Solar EV Charging at Home | Teltonika EVC 2

Stay up to date with product releases, company milestones, and the latest EVC 2 innovations in the Teltonika newsroom. More News 4/2/2026 New partnership with UK EV Installers to expand smart charging in the UK 3/19/2026 Teltonika Energy and Powerverse Announce Strategic Partnership 3/10/2026 Partnership with Kelvelec in the UK How to turn sunlight into free drive 17 October 2025 From Generation to Smart Utilisation Electricity prices continue to rise across Europe, putting increasing pressure on electric vehicle (EV) owners. In January 2025, household electricity costs varied widely – from €0.091 per kWh in Budapest to €0.404 per kWh in Berlin – with the EU average around €0.255 per kWh . In Germany, rates reached about €0.38 per kWh in early 2025 , among the highest in the region. These figures highlight why efficient energy management has become an essential part of owning and charging an electric vehicle. At the same time, Europe and the world are witnessing an unprecedented surge in solar power adoption. In 2024, global solar PV installations increased by 597 GW – a 33 % growth compared to 2023 . By mid-2025, another 380 GW had been added globally, representing a 64 % increase compared with the same period in 2024. This shift shows that more households and businesses are investing in solar energy systems as part of their long-term strategy for energy independence and cost stability. As solar adoption grows, the focus is moving from generation to smart utilisation. Instead of exporting surplus electricity to the grid at low feed-in rates, homeowners now prefer to use it themselves. Integrating a smart EV charger with solar integration makes this possible by detecting when solar generation exceeds household demand and redirecting that surplus to charge an electric vehicle. In this way, sunlight is turned into measurable financial benefit – reducing reliance on expensive grid electricity and maximising the value of self-produced power. The Economics of Energy-Efficient EV Charging With electricity prices high and solar generation accelerating, the question is no longer if you should optimise self-consumption – but how . Studies show that while official EV efficiency averages about 19 kWh/100 km, real-world values are closer to 21 ± 4 kWh/100 km . Using 0.21 kWh per km as a realistic figure, the average cost to charge an EV with grid electricity at €0.255 per kWh is around €0.0536 per km – or €53.60 per 1,000 km. For a driver covering 15,000 km per year, that totals 3,150 kWh. Assuming a solar-aware system supplies 60 % of that energy (1,890 kWh), the remaining 1,260 kWh would be drawn from the grid, costing €321.30. Without such a system, fully grid-supplied consumption would cost ~ €803.25. That yields annual savings of €482. Parameter Value / Assumption Average electricity price (EU, 2025) €0.255 per kWh Average EV consumption 0.21 kWh per km Cost per km (grid electricity) 0.21 × 0.255 = €0.0536 / km Cost per 1,000 km €53.60 Annual driving distance 15,000 km → 3,150 kWh total Incentives and Subsidies in 2025 Across Europe, various support programmes are helping homeowners embrace EV charging solutions powered by renewable energy: United Kingdom Smart charging incentives and energy-cap protections for residential users. Learn more Germany Regional subsidies for home EV charging systems, with electricity prices averaging around €0.38 /kWh. Learn more European Commission Continued investment in clean infrastructure and renewable integration under EU energy frameworks. Learn more If a solar-aware smart charging system costs €2,500 to install and €800 is covered by subsidies, the payback time is roughly 3.5 years. After that, every kilometre driven on solar energy effectively becomes free – turning the charger into both a sustainability and financial investment. How Smart EV Charging Systems Work A smart EV charger is designed to make the most of every kilowatt generated by a solar PV system. By combining real-time monitoring, load management and automation, it ensures cost-efficient EV charging without compromising safety or convenience. Core Operating Principles Solar surplus management – When solar panels generate more electricity than your household currently uses, the charger detects this surplus and redirects it into the EV battery instead of exporting it to the grid. Dynamic load balancing – In homes with three-phase connections, the charger distributes current evenly and automatically adjusts charging speed as household demand changes. This protects your power supply and ensures the fastest safe charging rate. Smart energy mix – The EV smart charging system can combine solar and grid power, switching between them according to availability and cost. Using smart scheduling, it prioritises off-peak charging or solar surplus periods to minimise the electricity bill. Connected intelligence – With built-in Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and LTE connectivity, smart chargers enable cloud-based monitoring, firmware updates, and data insights in real time – ensuring your system remains secure, efficient, and up-to-date. Such intelligent coordination helps EV owners buy less energy from the grid and charge at home more economically, enhancing both comfort and sustainability. Design, Durability and Integration The growing home charging market offers many options, but not all combine practicality, intelligence, and modern design. Some models prioritise function, resulting in bulky or industrial-looking units that clash with home architecture. Others appear elegant but lack smart features or weather protection. A high-quality EV charger for solar panels should therefore achieve balance – blending seamlessly into its surroundings while delivering reliable, intelligent performance in all climates. • Dynamic Load Management with Leader-Follower Function

Stay up to date with product releases, company milestones, and the latest EVC 2 innovations in the Teltonika newsroom. More News 4/2/2026 New partnership with UK EV Installers to expand smart charging in the UK 3/19/2026 Teltonika Energy and Powerverse Announce Strategic Partnership 3/10/2026 Partnership with Kelvelec in the UK Dynamic Load Management with Leader-Follower Function 21 July 2023 In this article, we'll unravel the concept of Dynamic Load Management for electric vehicle charging, focusing on Leader-Follower functionality. We'll talk about the benefits it brings, and look at some real-world examples of how and where it can be used. Understanding Dynamic Load Management with Leader-Follower Function Dynamic load management in electric vehicle charging is a system that wisely distributes power among multiple charging stations, responding to the overall demand and supply in the grid. The Leader-Follower functionality enhances this process. In a Leader-Follower arrangement, a primary charging point (the Leader) directs one or more secondary charging points (the Follower). The Leader charger determines power allocation to each of the Follower chargers by interpreting the data collated from them. This system ensures an optimal load on the grid and guarantees efficient use of available power. The Advantages of Dynamic Load Management with Leader-Follower Function 1. Optimized Power Distribution: The Leader-Follower functionality allows the effective allocation of power across multiple charging points.
